Why have a singing group for pregnancy and Parenthood at all?
As we are a singing group may I use a “Sound of Music quote” uttered by Julie Andrews herself, before answering?
“Let’s start at the very beginning."
My background is in Midwifery, so I have been able to observe at close hand the growing number of women with high levels of stress and fear in pregnancy. Many parents also struggle with their mental health following the arrival of their baby.
I began to search for the answer to this problem and was drawn to music therapy. My research convinced me that there would be enormous benefits resulting from a pregnancy singing group populated with new Mums and their babies.
I am not a musician but everything I was reading showed me that a baby’s brain is primed for its mother’s voice. It doesn’t matter if you can sing or not, a mother’s voice is the most beautiful sound in the world for her baby! Babies love their family’s voices too.

Singing is free, it’s easy, portable and instant! You can take it anywhere and use it any time. If parents become used to singing to their babies during pregnancy and have already started this dialogue, it will most likely already be second nature to continue that dialogue once the baby is born.
Singing during pregnancy produces vibrations which are beneficial to the baby’s physiological, emotional and psychological development. The baby in-utero is surrounded by many kinds of sounds and studies show that during pregnancy the baby is very sensitive to them particularly the parent’s voice.
The mother’s singing voice provides a gentle sound massage in the womb, promoting the baby’s feeling of well-being, contributing to healthy development.
Newborn babies are vulnerable and therefore constantly seeking reassurance. Because their hearing is fully developed many weeks before birth, their Mother's voice is already familiar to them and so provides one of the best ways to soothe them.
Singing with movement is a great way to calm a baby down and we teach lullaby’s and simple chants for this purpose.
By attending Mamas’ Voices weekly, you will reduce the detrimental effects of social isolation and feel the joy of communal singing!
We look forward to seeing you on Monday mornings 11-12 at Wild and Wild in Congleton where you will receive a warm welcome!
